Historical Provenance: Sunart Photo Co. "Special No. 1" Tripod (Pat. May 9, 1899)

This rare early photographic tripod was manufactured by the Sunart Photo Co. of Rochester, New York, and is marked "Special No. 1" with the patent date May 9, 1899. It is an artifact from the transitional period in photographic history when portability and mechanical innovation were rapidly changing how amateur photography was practiced.

The tripod base is labeled with the following:
"Sunart Photo Co., Special No. 1, Pat’d May 9, 1899, Rochester, N.Y., EST. TRIPLY"

It features triply laminated hardwood legs and a cast metal head, incorporating a patented central locking collar and folding leg system. These design elements allowed for faster setup and compact storage, aligning with the needs of field photographers in the late 19th century. The May 9, 1899 patent most likely corresponds with U.S. Patent No. 624,701,
